An analysis conducted by Burrtec Waste Management found that the City’s Earth Day Festival and 20th Annual Arbor Day Celebration produced zero waste. All waste materials disposed of at the event were either recycled or composted and approximately 692 pounds of mixed recycling and 134 pounds of organic material was collected and taken to a recycling center.
More than 200 volunteers underwent training about the importance of recycling and composting and learned how to identify correct bins for waste items. No trash cans were used at the event and volunteers monitored recycling and composting bins to ensure that guests disposed of waste materials correctly.
The City worked with event vendors at the event to guarantee that all vendor materials could be reused, recycled and composted. Burrtec Waste Industries also assisted in making the event waste-free by providing recycling and composting bins.
In addition to working hard to obtain the events zero-waste status, the City gave out 1,000 one-gallon trees, 1,000 bags of mulch and planted 80 new trees at Central Park in celebration of Arbor Day. Approximately 3,000 guests attended the event and community members across the City also took advantage of free bus and shuttle rides all day long on April 18, thanks to MV Transportation.
