Respite refers to short-term, temporary care to allow caregivers and family members a break from their daily routines.  It can also be used for those individuals who require short-term assistance while recovering from an illness or accident.
Families and caregivers who provide constant care for their elderly family member may need some time away from their responsibilities to tend to their own needs.  Respite care allows caregivers to take this time while knowing that their family member will be well cared for by trained staff.

There are several types of respite care, ranging from a few hours to overnight, to longer-term care.  Respite care can be provided in the home, adult day care centers, senior centers, and assisted living communities.   When looking at care in assisted living communities, be sure to look at the services provided.  Besides the obvious, such as a safe and secure environment, there are other aspects to consider:

• What is the training of the caregivers?

• Does the staff appear friendly and happy?

• Is there assistance with personal care and medication?

• What are the social programs provided?

• Are three nutritious meals and snacks provided?

• Do the residents appear well cared for?

• Does the program provide transportation?

• Is there a wellness nurse on site?

• How far ahead of time do services need to be arranged?

• What services are included in the fee, and are there any additional costs?

Respite care helps to avoid burnout, stress and fatigue.  It gives caregivers and families time to relax and come back to their role revitalized and better able to care for their elderly family member.  This in turn can help prevent abuse and neglect, and support the family unity.  Respite can help in a period of crisis or when recovering from an illness.  Respite care is often referred to as a gift of time.
