The recent swine flu outbreak has had people everywhere bordering on hysteria. The medical advice given is to wear facemasks and take the anti-viral drug called Tamiflu. But wearing a facemask isn’t the most effective defense and Tamiflu can have many serious side effects. In offering this advice, the conventional media actually left out the most effective protection against swine flu or any opportunistic bacteria or viruses. What they forgot to mention was the power of natural immunity.
So, before we have a serious outbreak (or even a minor illness), be sure to use these proactive, natural ways to boost your immunity. Here are a few that have stood the test of time:
• Fermented cod liver oil is a great source of Vitamins A, D, E and K. It offers strong protection against all types of infection as well as environmental toxins (Green Pasture puts out the best fermented version and it’s the only one I personally use).
• One of the richest sources of Vitamin C is fermented sauerkraut. I carry a homemade product by Little Red Hen and Co.
• Bone broth, also known as stock, plays a double role of supporting the immune system and assisting the body to detoxify. Download an easy recipe at my website www.womenshealthadvantageonline.com.
• Coconut oil is nourishing to both the adrenals and thyroid. It’s also high in lauric acid, which has anti-viral, antibacterial, and anti-fungal properties. Swine flu is a lipid coated virus and is inactivated by sufficient amounts of monolaurin (which is what our bodies convert lauric acid into). Two to three tablespoons of coconut oil spread through the day appears to be an adequate dosage to fight infection, even from virulent antibiotic-resistant organisms such as MRSA. It also provides quick energy and stabilizes blood sugar.
• Healthy gut flora provides 85 percent of our protection against disease. So always consume plenty of lacto-fermented and cultured foods and beverages (fermented sauerkraut, kefir, yogurt, kombucha, etc.). Remember to avoid refined carbohydrates and simple sugars that provide no food value and depress the immune system for up to six hours or more.
