Last month we started looking at things we could update or replace in an RV to help make the RV experience more enjoyable. We ended the article with a promise to tackle the kitchen next.
So let’s jump in. A lot of the things used in an RV kitchen are the same items used in your home and can be found at your local hardware store. A new faucet for the kitchen sink, one with a detachable head, could open up all kinds of possibilities. The kitchen sink is probably the largest sink in the RV, so why not put it to other uses…like washing your hair? Think how easy it would be with a faucet that has a hand-held spout.
Speaking of sinks, a deeper sink might be just the ticket. Changing out a sink is a relatively easy task. Plumbing is one of the safest tasks a do-it-yourselfer can do. If you make a mistake, things just get wet. They don’t blow up, catch on fire, or electrocute you!
Changing out a sink is also a good excuse for new countertops. One of the biggest single items in an RV that really dates an RV is the countertops. It’s not necessary to go online and Google an RV repair center; there are large numbers of local contractors who can handle replacing countertops at reasonable rates.
Space is always at a premium in an RV. Over every stove is a vent hood. A combination vent and microwave might be just the answer. And you don’t need a 2.0 cubic-foot microwave, unless you want to nuke a 20-pound turkey. A smaller 0.9 cubic-foot microwave will cook your oatmeal, pop your popcorn, and heat up your coffee.
If you travel in your RV, the cabinets and appliances are always being bounced around. All that vibration causes things to loosen up in an RV. You need to tighten all the screws you can see on a regular basis. If you don’t, threads on screws and bolts become damaged, and the holes the screws fit in become enlarged. If that happens, you are past the maintenance stage and into the costly repair phase.
Until next month, enjoy the RV life and always practice safety.
