Heel and or arch pain is one of the most common foot ailments affecting millions of people on a daily basis.  Unfortunately, this affliction is left untreated by a majority of the population, figuring that it will go away, or accepting that the pain is typical with excessive standing or walking.  Eventually, this ailment becomes chronic in nature, and eventually causes other problems such as ankle, shin, knee, hip, and lower back pain due to changes in walking patterns.
So what causes this problem to arise?  The number one reason is improper biomechanics of the feet along with an abnormal gait (walking) pattern, placing too much stress on the heel bone and the soft tissue that attaches to it.  The medical term for this inflammatory response is “Plantar Fasciitis.”  This condition occurs when the plantar fascia (a ligament attached to the heel bone which supports your arch) is strained over time beyond its normal extension, causing the soft tissue fibers to excessively stretch or tear resulting in pain and inflammation.  Eventually, this could lead to development of excess bone underneath the heel commonly known as a “Heel Spur.”

The good news is that 90 percent of our patients who suffer from Plantar Fasciitis get relief with conservative treatment.  The most effective form of treatment relieving stress on the heel and improving the alignment between the feet and legs is custom made orthotics (which are supportive insoles).  To treat the symptoms we like to use physical therapy, this consists of massage, ultrasound heat, and electrical stimulation, which helps to speed up the healing process and regain flexibility in the foot.  Other forms of conservative treatment would include, anti-inflammatory medicines like (Advil, Aleve), rest, ice, strengthening and stretching exercises, cortisone injections, and cast immobilization.  Why live with pain if you don’t have to?
