Adorn the old-west wood porch.
Happiness inside.
Old Town Newhall is different from the rest of Santa Clarita. The old-growth trees and roads that were once stage coach and pony express trails hold on to secrets. Listen and old-timers will spin stories about the area’s colorful history.
Many of the buildings in Newhall have stories of their own, too. For instance, The Golden Oaks Pavilion on Lyons Avenue (known to many as “the old Western building”) has a charm that eludes new suburban strip malls. The Old-West style wooden porch, in particular, takes one back to a different place and time.
The Pavilion was constructed in 1977 by Dr. Alan Barbakow from material reclaimed from the 1971 Sylmar earthquake. Specifically, the structure was built from the redwood timbers and reinforcements of a tunnel that once linked Interstates 5 and 405. Using recycled materials in this manner would make the building “green” at time when green was just a color.
The Golden Oaks Pavilion is now home to Rooms & Blooms, arguably one of the area’s most unique shopping experiences. Many customers say that the building’s character is the “perfect fit” for the shop’s eclectic mix of gift, garden, home and baby items. Their “Instant Attraction” Magnet Bulletin Boards are now being sold in shops all around the west.
This Independence Day, the Rooms & Blooms porch will host cowboy and Western singer John Bergstrom and friends as they serenade parade-goers before the annual July 4th Parade down Lyons Avenue. Come early – stay late.
Rooms & Blooms is located at 23127 Lyons Ave in Santa Clarita. For more information, please call 661-287-0050 and visit www.roomsandblooms.com .
