It seems everyone is wearing an appliance that protects the teeth.  The kids are wearing sports guards, teens are wearing retainers and almost all adults should be wearing Night Guards.  I can’t tell you what a great investment a Night Guard is.  I get patients in every week with fractured teeth, chips on their front teeth and sore muscles and TMJ from clenching and grinding.  The treatment or prevention for all these issues is a Night Guard worn each night as you sleep.  But, they don’t help sitting in your nightstand, you actually have to wear them.

You need to remember that the original dental philosophy was that we were all supposed to be in dentures at 60 and die at 62!  We just aren’t doing that.  If I’m going to live to 90 I want all my own teeth.  The proactive approach of excellent oral hygiene of brushing, flossing, seeing your hygienist and dentist two to four times per year is helping to keep almost everyone’s teeth for their lifetime.

With the basics out of the way, we can focus on quality.  I want attractive teeth that look the age I feel.  Thirty!  White, healthy, attractive, not chipped, worn and broken.  The visually aging quality of abraded teeth is depressing.  Wearing a night guard can reduce your wear by 30 percent.  It can reduce the incidence of tooth fracture, cracking, and restoration failure.  These appliances are also a de-stressor for your TMJ and can relieve muscle tension and the associated headaches.

As a financial investment the return on investment (ROI) is significant.  A quality Night Guard can last 10 to 15 years and prevent the need for many restorations.  A single filling on a chipped or fractured tooth is approximately half the cost of a Night Guard.  Ultimately a Night Guard could save you numerous times its original cost.  Ask your team if this appliance could help you.
