Aquatic Therapy, also known as pool therapy, has many benefits.  It can be used for pain relief, strengthening, improving flexibility, muscle relaxation and/or a simple, gentle means to get back into exercising.  Water has many qualities that can assist in rehabilitation.  When we are in the pool, the water acts to support us.  The result of this support is less stress on the muscles and joints, which enables us to move more easily and have less impact and compression on our joints.
If muscles are weak, they can move more easily in the water.  At the same time, water can provide excellent resistance for the strengthening of a weak musculature.  Water can also induce greater muscle relaxation and can assist in decreasing muscle spasm and pain.  Aquatic Physical Therapy is commonly used for, but not limited to, spinal, knee, hip and shoulder rehabilitation.

As you can see, water can be an important tool in the rehabilitation of many injuries as well as providing a good means to improve overall fitness and well being.
