National Event Stresses Importance of Proper Detection
Individuals can take advantage of free, confidential memory screenings as part of National Memory Screening Day, an annual initiative of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) to promote proper detection of memory problems. The screenings are taking place on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are by appointment. Visiting Angels is located at 24001 Newhall Ranch Road, Suite 270 in Valencia.
It is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, and the number is escalating in line with aging baby boomers. Age is the greatest risk factor, with the incidence of the disease doubling every five years between 65 and 95.
At least half of the cases of mild and moderate dementia go undetected by physicians. Early diagnosis can facilitate better treatment since numerous studies show that available medical treatments can help delay progression of symptoms. With early diagnosis, individuals with the disease may obtain appropriate medical treatment and behavioral management interventions, be more involved in long-term planning, and obtain social services support for themselves and their families.
Memory screenings are a significant first step toward finding out if a person has a memory problem. Memory screenings are administered by qualified healthcare professionals and consist of a series of questions and tasks to assess memory. The screening takes about five to 10 minutes and is not a diagnosis; individuals with below- normal scores or those who still have concerns are encouraged to pursue further medical evaluation.
