Christmas time is just around the corner and everyone is searching for the best gift. What is the best gift a person can give? The answer is definitely a subjective one. If you ask me, I say it is the gift of sight. It is a wonderful feeling to have crisp clear vision. Your eyes are always giving and providing for you everyday, from the time you open your eyes until you shut your eyes to go to sleep. What a spectacular thing your sight is!
That is why I urge you to not neglect your eyes. Get your eyes examined regularly, at least once every one or two years. You may not remember the actual recommended date, but generally speaking, contact lens wearers are to get their eyes examined once a year, if not sooner. While, non-contact lens users should be seen every one to two years, depending on their age and diagnosis.
Contact lens wearers must be seen once a year to evaluate and be reminded about the proper use of their contact lenses. The yearly evaluation will consist of making sure the person has the absolute best vision, fit and comfort with the contact lenses. The eye health will be assessed to make sure that there is no damage to the eye due to hypoxia (oxygen deprivation). What the doctor looks for is abnormal blood vessel growth (neovascularization) to the part of the eye located underneath the contact lens (the cornea).
Non-contact lens wearers should be seen once every one or two years. For example, younger patients should be seen at least once a year due to their highly changing and unstable bodily changes. As their body is quickly developing, so are their eyes and their prescriptions. Another example is patients who have eye threatening diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and others. It is highly advised that they evaluate their eye health with dilation at least once a year to rule out ocular involvement. When the disease is seen in the eye, the patient must be seen for follow-ups throughout the year.
I urge you to take good care of your health, including your eye health. Pick up the phone and call us to get your eyes examined. I will answer all of your questions and provide you with models of the eye to further depict my explanations.
