Each month I highlight a workshop that weSPARK offers to enhance the lives of cancer patients, their friends and families.  Michael Watson of Valencia Martial Arts teaches Tai Chi on Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m.  Using the flowing and graceful movements of Tai Chi is very beneficial for your mind and body.  It reduces stress, improves balance and coordination, enhances memory and concentration, improves circulation, relieves joint stiffness and increases flexibility.  One weSPARK guest Candi Sisk says, “doing tai chi forces me to be in the present moment.  I find it peaceful and meditative.  Thanks so much to Michael for his continued dedication to weSPARK.”
weSPARK is thrilled to announce that a new yoga class will be taught by Jennifer Jhaveri on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m.  Yoga is a great practice because it calms the nervous system and balances the body, mind and spirit.  Jennifer’s class will continue the healing journey of our guests as they relax, breathe deeply, gain strength and flexibility while quieting their minds and welcoming tranquility into their lives.
During the month of January, every other Tuesday at 10 a.m., Sharon Earle, LMFT will be teaching our guests the benefits of meditation as well as leading them through this relaxing and stress reducing technique.  After the meditation, guests will have the ability to process their experiences, ask questions and learn tips on how to better meditate.  On the alternate Tuesday, I will be teaching a creative writing class during which guests will be given prompts from all five senses which will encourage them to explore specific ideas and feelings and express themselves creatively through the written word.  This is a fun class where guests have the chance to let their imaginations soar in a safe environment.
When we first opened our doors in Santa Clarita, we had all our support groups and only one yoga class.  We now offer four different types of yoga and/or Tai Chi every day, Reiki, Guided Imagery and Jewelry Making regularly.  In 2010 healing workshops will include: a Guided Imagery series on stress management, eliminating fears and phobias, anxiety reduction and improving sleep; Qi Gong breathing exercises; biofeedback and much more.
