Addictions can come in many forms and are often intertwined. For example eating disorders have shown many similarities between addictive conditions such as alcoholism, smoking, gambling, sex and drug addiction. Though some people can be predisposed to addictive behaviors, the behavior typically originates as a coping mechanism from boredom, stress, anxiety or severe trauma – a temporary escape into a euphoric state of mind where life seemingly becomes more manageable. Addicts gravitate toward their “drug of choice” to “self-medicate.” Heroin, for instance, is effective at “normalizing” people who suffer from delusions and hallucinations (mostly schizophrenics). Cocaine can quickly lift a depression, or enable a person with attention-deficit disorder to become better organized and focused. Marijuana and alcohol typically are used for chronic anxiety and some forms of ADHD. Similarly food can equally be used as a coping mechanism causing serious health consequences such as obesity, psychological disorders, diabetes, and gastric disturbances to name just a few.
