I would like to take this moment to wish you a healthy and happy New Year!  While discussing health, I will point out that the condition of the mouth has an effect on cardiovascular disease.  It is estimated that 80 million people in the U.S. have some form of cardiovascular disease.  These diseases being high blood pressure, coronary disease, stroke and heart failure.  Studies have shown a link between cardiovascular disease and periodontal (gum) disease.  Forms of gum disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis (bone loss), can be indicators for cardiovascular problems.  This is why it is essential for people at risk for cardiovascular disease to visit a dentist regularly with a registered dental hygienist; and to practice good oral hygiene.
Practicing proper oral hygiene is essential to maintaining a healthy environment.  This includes flossing daily, brushing twice a day, and visiting a dentist at least twice a year.  A healthy diet and exercise are also recommended.
Please tell your physician of any dental problems; and concurrently tell your dentist of any medical changes or problems.  You, as a participating patient, can help your health professionals by providing proper health information.
So, in conclusion, I hope this information will contribute to a healthy 2010.  Happy New Year!
