Most women are happy to share stories regarding their upgraded bra sizes and tummy tightening procedures, but they rarely are comfortable discussing details of their vaginal anatomy, even among friends. But this shouldn’t be the case. Just like breasts, this unique feature of women’s bodies comes in different sizes and shapes. While all aspects of a woman’s body are beautiful, many women find themselves embarrassed or insecure regarding the appearance of their labia.
Some women have large labia from the onset of puberty while others develop the condition from childbirth, hormones, or aging. Women with enlarged labia can experience painful intercourse, or feel discomfort during everyday activities or from wearing snug clothing. Some women shun intimacy because the tissue of their labia minora (“inner lips”) protrudes beyond the labia majora (“outer lips”). The good news is all of these concerns can be easily addressed by one simple procedure: labiaplasty.
In his more than 25 years of practice, board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Edward Pechter, has performed many of these relatively low cost procedures in his nationally accredited office operating suite. The operation is usually done under a brief general anesthetic on an outpatient basis. The excess tissue is marked with surgical ink, infiltrated with local anesthetic to diminish pain and blood loss, and then trimmed. The incisions are repaired with a series of dissolving stitches. Patients typically require just a few days of down time or time off work. There may be mild burning or pain for the first two – three days following surgery and intercourse must be avoided for six weeks. Complications such as infection or wound separation are possible but rare. Once recovery is complete, patients are able to resume full physical and sexual activities, usually with increased self-confidence and enjoyment.
If you think you may be a candidate for labiaplasty, we encourage you to come in for a complimentary consultation. We would love to help you.
