Often times I see people who are at the end of their rope when trying to fix or change their lives. They claim they’ve tried everything: medication, acupuncture, diet changes, etc. My response is: Really? Everything? Everything is a lot! When I ask if they’ve done any research or read books, specifically on that topic, most of the times the response is no. So, what makes us believe that we’ve done everything? In this day and age, there’s a need for a quick fix for everything. If someone has a weight problem, instead of actually working on it, they may choose to go under the knife or take harmful chemicals to reduce their appetite and increase their energy. Or if someone is suffering from chronic pain and the MDs have done all they can, they may resort to self medicating with pain pills or even alcohol without truly alleviating the pain. One reality that I’m sure most people don’t like to hear is that sometimes there just isn’t a quick fix. You can’t expect years of weight gain to disappear magically (and in a healthy way) overnight. Some may claim they can make this happen but let’s be real. Let’s be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the facts.
Life does take work. If you have any kind of health or relationship problem, it may take a little more work to try to solve it. For example, in the case of chronic pain, sometimes there is no cure and no solution that would bring you to 100%. So, somehow, you have to learn to deal with it instead of running away from it. One of the best things you can do is to empower yourself with knowledge. The more you know, the better off you will be in understanding the problem and then coming up with creative ways to solve it. I know that there is a ton of information, some accurate and some definitely wrong. That’s why it’s best to read a variety of theories or research regarding the problem. Then, whatever you try, just remember that it won’t change overnight. You also have the right to get a second opinion. It’s a great idea to keep a journal of what you have tried, how long you tried it and what the results were. This way you have proof.
