UNIFEM is the women’s fund of the United Nations that provides financial and technical assistance for innovative programs and strategies to women’s empowerment and gender equality.  Their Initiative to “Say NO-UNITE” reaches a first milestone on March 2, 2010!  Local Zontian and Zonta International (ZI), Dianne Curtis, (pictured) participated in the 54th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.  The Initiative was launched in November 2009 as a web platform to facilitate and showcase efforts to address gender-based violence by individuals, governments and civil society.  Say NO-UNITE actions have come from around the world to bring awareness about the prevention of violence against women and girls.  Government and parliamentarians in Austria said No; “Men for Gender Equality Now” traveled across Kenya; A Declaration of the European Parliament calls for a “Year of Zero Tolerance on Violence against Women;” Brazilian trade unions demanded 24 hour access to trained police to report gender violence; A Men’s Summit in the Philippines strategized how to end domestic violence; and U.S. organizations are gathering signatures to support the International Violence against Women Act.  ZI, a longtime partner of UNIFEM, contributed $100,000 for the UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women.
Local Zontians will join observers of Denim Day around the world on Wednesday April 21, 2010.  In 1998, an Italian Supreme Court decision overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans reasoning she must have helped her attacker remove them.  Wearing jeans on Denim Day became an international symbol of protest against sexual assault’s erroneous and destructive attitudes.  Uniting against assault of girls, women, boys and men, Denim Day protests against assault and supports survivors of such violence.   Wear denim on April 21, 2010.
