I came across an interesting incident in my personal life that affected my thoughts about food. Here's the story: Most mornings out of the week, I juice carrots that I buy from Weiser Farms so that I can enjoy it with my after workout protein shake followed by breakfast. I like the purple carrots when available and the purple haze carrots. But because I was so busy and out of town, I forgot about the carrots for about two weeks.
When I got around to it, I started my juicing regimen again and I discovered that they were not so sweet and, by the time I got around to the last batch, they tasted like carrots from the supermarket. Mind you, these carrots were bought three weeks ago from Santa Monica Farmers' Market but even the last few looked almost perfect.
They may have looked perfect, but things were not as they seemed. They were beautiful on the outside but had no substance and vitality inside. Oops, was I talking about people or veggies? It's what is in the inside that counts. Anyway, the carrots were not good and that got me thinking, how long do the vegetables you buy at the supermarket sit before you purchase them? Could it actually be three weeks or more? All organic is not the same.
Support your local organic farmers' market. We have one at COC on Sundays and there are a few others in Santa Clarita. Also, if anyone wants to join me on Wednesdays in Santa Monica, I am more than happy to take you around. Just shoot me an email: Jason@MaruValencia.com
