I am going to change gears from water filtration this month and address a question that has come up several times this year. Although this issue affects only a small percentage of the SCV residents, I feel that it is important these questions be answered for all.
Three times this last month, I have received calls from residents in the Sand Canyon area asking about automatic water softener alternatives. It appears that someone knocking on their door is telling them that Measure “S” requires that their automatic softener be replaced with an authorized alternative.
The problem here is that these homeowners have a septic tank and are not attached to the LACSD sewer system. Measure “S” does not apply to homes with a septic tank. Not only may these homeowners keep their automatic water softeners, they may purchase a new one if they wish. The LACSD will not pay anyone to remove their softener that discharges to a septic tank. No rebates will be issued without prior authorization. If you are unsure if this does or does not apply to you, please call me. I will be happy to provide you with the correct information. Please be aware that no one may discharge (drain) an automatic water softener to a hillside, lawn, landscape drain or to the street. This is a bigger fine than draining to the sewer.
Another question frequently asked of me is where to buy salt for automatic water softeners. One customer of mine in Sand Canyon actually wanted to replace his unit with a whole house water filter because he could not find bags of salt. There are also many residents in Placerita Canyon on septic tanks.
I spoke with John, the manager of the Vons Market at Soledad Canyon and Sand Canyon. They have 40-pound bags in stock all the time and there are no immediate plans to discontinue selling salt. This would make sense due to many residents near that store that can legally own an automatic water softener. If anyone has questions on where to buy salt or if Measure “S” applies to them, please call me. If for some reason I do not have the answer, I know where to find it. Please call me anytime.
Thank you, and as always, good health to all.
