A child’s first dental visit should be a pleasant experience. Typically a child’s first visit could be as early as one year old, this may seem a bit early but it’s a good idea to familiarize your child with the dentist at an early age. An enjoyable first visit could leave a lasting impression on your child that could benefit them into their adult life making it easier to go to the dentist without fear. Some adults that have had bad dental experiences sometimes avoid taking their own children to the dentist so that they don’t have to go through what they went through as a kid.
It takes only a matter of seconds for a dental assistant or dental hygienist to make an assessment of a child’s behavior during their first appointment. For the most part children are cooperative as long as they are involved in the appointment. It is inevitable to fear the unknown, for that exact reason we guide our pediatric patients through the appointment step by step explaining to them what we are doing and why.
It could be said that a parent being present for a child’s dental appointment is beneficial, providing a secure and nurturing environment. On the other hand, some children require the parent to wait in the reception room in order to allow the child to focus on the dental team. A child’s positive initial feelings towards the dentist’s office could ultimately lead to better oral health.
We strive to make every patients experience a positive one, especially a young child’s, due to the lasting impression it will have. Positive first impressions leave patients more likely to come in for regular hygiene and dental appointments. Whatever you and your child’s dental needs maybe, we are here to serve you!
