Everywhere you go, you can’t help but notice that vintage is “in.” From the gorgeous dress forms to wire birdcages, the beautiful flowers and torn edges, vintage has take the scrapbooking world by storm this year.
Vintage scrapbooking looks intimidating at first: lots of layers and distressing; many scrapbookers have been asking, “How do I get this effect?” as they pour over some of the distressed sample layouts.  If you are wanting a “vintage” look on your pages, here are some techniques that you should try on your pages:
1. Tearing : Perhaps the simplest technique of them all, this is the one that scares people the most: Tearing into that beautiful paper! Abandon caution, friends! Be bold and rip that paper. Then curl it back with your fingers.  Or maybe remove a whole chunk. There’s no mistake you make when tearing. But then… tuck! Tuck bits of a different paper or lace under your tearing to have them just peek out and create dimension. You will see in the sample layout that the artist has lace peeking out.
2. Chalking: By chalking, we don’t mean using “chalk”, we mean using “chalk inkpads”. They give a wonderful brownish distressed edge to everything you do. We prefer Chestnut Roan and Dark Brown by Cat’s Eye, but also are loving the Mocha Mama and Amaretto from QuickQuotes. Just take those pads and rub down those edges!
3. Distressing: Whether you are using the Tim Holtz Edge Distressing Tool or the Donna Salazar Distrezz It All, tear up those edges and make them fluffy before chalking for a really great distressed effect!
4. Paint: Get out those acrylic paints and prepare to be bold. White paint turns old book pages into journaling cards. It also helps to build texture and can be used to distress more modern looking paper.
5. Ephemera: Although no one is really sure how to pronounce this word, we sure do love it. It is just old “stuff.” Old stamps, postcards, clippings. Get it out and use it!
