There are times in our lives when we simply do not know what to do.  We know that we need to do something.  We are just not quite sure what that “something” is.  We know that we need to make a decision – but what decision?  We know that we need to move forward – but how?  As uncomfortable and stressful as it may seem, the reality is that there are simply times in our lives when we do not know what to do.  The very first thing that I have learned is that when you do not know what to do, don’t do anything.  Far too many mistakes are made when we force a decision while being uncertain if this is truly the right or even best decision for the situation.  Many bad decisions have been made out of haste.  Whatever you do, do not make a decision simply because you are feeling impatient.  Time, clarity, and patience are our friends when it comes to the decision making process.  The second thing I have learned is this – even when you do not know what to do, at least determine what you are not going to do.
For instance, even though I do not know what I am going to do, I know that I am not going to give up.  Giving up, walking away, throwing in the towel is just not an option for me.  Another thing I know that I am not going to do is, repeat the mistakes of the past.  I may not know what I am going to do, but I have seen what doesn’t work and I do know that I’m not going to do those things again.  I refuse to repeat the mistakes of the past.  I refuse to not gain the lessons of the past.  Another thing that I know that I am not going to do is, react out of emotion.  I refuse to be led by my emotions.  My emotions will mislead me and cause me to make decisions based on what makes me feel good and not necessarily what’s best for the situation.  So, I am going to keep my emotions in check and see to it that they do not dictate to me, but rather I dictate to them.  The last thing that I know that I am not going to do is, isolate myself.  In addition to praying and seeking direction from God, I am going to trust God to surround me with wise, experienced, and mature counsel.  So there you have it, even when you don’t know what to do, at least know what you are not going to do.
