Here come the holidays with anticipation of family, friends and good cheer. But there is also the realization of the energy needed to accomplish the necessary preparation for company, parties, meals, cards, and gifts…
So how can you reduce the stress and enjoy the holidays? Simple, clear out the clutter and don’t over commit!
That sounds easy, and it is easy if you make a conscious decision to do it! For most, just the thought of the clutter in our homes is daunting; the guest room, kid’s rooms, dining room, closets, etc.!
Here are suggestions to prepare for the holidays, the stress and extra “stuff” (“clutter”) that comes along with them. You must realize you won’t be able to clear your whole house in two days. This will take time (make a schedule) and patience.
Starting the first week in November, set a date to go through your children’s rooms eliminating toys and clothes that don’t fit, get played with, are old or have pieces missing. If it’s been under the bed for six months, it’s time to get rid of it! You can probably remove one-third of the rooms’ contents and your child won’t even notice. Now is the time to donate the good toys and nice clothes to your favorite charity. It also frees up space to put the new “goodies.”
Next, hit your dining room then the guest bedroom. Establish three goals for each room. Set a timer for two hours in each room. Play “beat the clock” and “just do it!” Think about the activities you’ll be doing then clear out and organize for those specific events. Plan to come back after the holidays and really dig things out if need be.
Lastly, don’t over commit to parties and gifts, etc. Time is precious and limited. By clearly setting your holiday priorities you can decide what to schedule to avoid burnout. Make this the year you send your holiday greetings by email, which will save time and money! Think about the quality of your holidays and not the quantity in the gift giving area too. Wouldn’t it be nice to end the year without a major hole in your bank account? By making these conscious decisions, you remain in control and can enjoy that “holiday cheer.”
