Youhwa Shin was awarded a scholarship prize of $1000 toward college at the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association gala held at Hart Park on October 17.  Scholarship committee members were Jaylene Armstrong, Pat Thayer, and Patti O’Hearn.
“The scholarship committee was very impressed with the quality of artwork exhibited by senior art students,” says Jaylene Armstrong, Chairperson and presenter of the award.  “The Scholarship Award Program is an integral part of the SCAA’s goals as it provides and promotes good art education communication – important to the student, parents, art chairs, and community at large.”
Each year SCAA awards a scholarship of $1,000 to a local high school student. The criteria for the SCAA scholarship is that the student have a future art career in mind; whether as a fine artist, animator, in mixed media or in teaching.  Six high school art department chairs competed this year: Golden Valley, Canyon, Hart, Saugus, Valencia, and West Ranch high schools. The senior artists produced a wide variety of work to meet the course requirements, as well, as to prepare their portfolios for submission to art schools and colleges.
In addition, each high school had an art exhibit by students who plan to further their art studies college or art school. Many pieces of work were photographed for consideration and comparisons. Approximately 12 students’ art met the criteria and the field was narrowed to six finalist.
“Ms. Shin of Golden Valley High School, showed talent and mastery of the in her beautiful works,” says Pat Thayer. “We congratulate Youhwa and her instructor, P. J. Vernon.”
“We take their hats off to the high schools and their staffs who devoted much time, effort, careful planning, and creative use of limited budgets.  The teachers planned challenging assignments, extensive exhibits and events to showcase student creativity and progress,” says Patty O’Hearn.
Ms. Shin and her parents were invited to the award ceremony during 21st Art Classic program. She accredited her teacher Ms. Vernon for being the inspiration in her art career.
