It’s late in the evening and the bright laptop screen glows blankly back in anticipation of something clever or simply something at all. What do we write, after all this is our very first with The Magazine of Santa Clarita writing editorial? What continues to come to mind, over and over again is, “why?” Oh, not why write the editorial, but why begin a chocolate business? In reply, we ask, “Why not?”
We know the odds are against us. Sure, we’ve never run our own business. Sure we don’t come with a culinary background. Sure there’s a 90 percent chance of a new business failing in the first three years, and let’s not even discuss the odds against two friends going into business together. What do we say to all the negative words being thrown our way, “Bring it on!”
In future editorials we will continue to answer “why” or even “why not,” and how we’ve changed our careers from corporate America to chocolatiers. To start our journey we’ll leave you with the following fun facts:
• Did you know chocolate is an aphrodisiac? It contains the chemical phenylethylamine, which is the same chemical that the brain produces when you’re in love. Who wants to pass up that 3:30 p.m. need for chocolate?
• Chocolate, especially the dark variety, is rich in anti-oxidants, which reduces the risk of heart disease and cancer. Chocolate also has copper, iron, zinc and magnesium -nutrients essential to the body. We ask, “why isn’t chocolate a part of our daily multi-vitamin?”
• Are you a little down or sad? Have some chocolate; it’s a natural form of anti-depressant. It produces serotonin –a chemical that elevates the mood. It is also referred to as the “happy chemical.” I’ll take a pound of serotonin please… how ‘bout you?
Now that chocolate sounds like your therapist, your nutritionist, and your doctor, share the experience through a random act of kindness; what adds more smiles to faces than receiving a delicious chocolate. PK’s Chocolates is your “act of kindness” for the season and for years to come. We look forward to becoming a part of your family.
PK’s Chocolates is opening soon in Canyon Country at 18962 Soledad Canyon Road behind Carl’s Jr. Restaurant. In the meantime, order through www.PKsChocolates.com. Happy Holidays!
