Thanks, once again, to the SCV’s generosity for making Comfort Keepers’ “Stop Senior Hunger” food drive a success.  With bins located throughout the valley, over half of a ton of food was raised.  All proceeds were donated to our SCV Senior Center, for distribution to our seniors in need, at an event held at the center on November 6.  Congratulations to Pat Gold, winner of the flat screen television grand prize!  Keynote speaker, Cardiologist Dr. Samuel Kojoglanian, addressed the audience on the importance of proper nutrition among seniors.  Dr. Kojoglanian, already author of many books, will have one coming out soon targeting health and nutrition.  Although the food drive has come to a close, please remember that donations are always welcome.  Comfort Keepers is also going to continue its campaign on senior nutrition.  One in three seniors is at risk for malnutrition, and not necessarily for not having enough to eat, but eating the wrong types of food.  Sometimes people who are overweight are suffering from malnutrition.  Aging is associated with distinct changes in the body composition; most notably, decreases in fluids and lean body mass and an increase in fat storage.  Changes in the body predispose older adults to dehydration, reduced metabolism, falls and injury and central weight gain.  Older people are at risk of malnutrition in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and in the general community.  As seniors age, their nutritional needs change.  Men and women have unique nutritional needs that must be addressed accordingly.  Men often require different amounts of vitamins and minerals than women, and vice versa. If individuals live alone, cooking may be more difficult, and they may be less inclined to prepare and cook nutritious meals.  It is important to assess specific gender needs, because it can have a direct impact on a senior’s ability to maintain health and independence.  Please call Comfort Keepers at 661-287-4200 for literature on senior nutrition, or go to www.stopseniorhunger.com.
