“How can you suffer through one pathetic tale of woe after another?”  If I had a dollar, okay – in this economy $100, for every time I’ve been asked that question, I could take a weekend excursion to Oxnard!
Feeling sorry for therapists is like being sad for someone with season tickets to the best seats in the theater.  In my work, clients pay me to listen to their autobiographies, suspense thrillers, love stories, mysteries, dramas, and even a few comedies, fables, and fairy tales.  I hear prequels to stories with endings that haven’t yet been written.  I work with every day heroes and unlikely superstars.  I am entrusted with dirty little secrets, skeletons being liberated from closets, sneaky plots, and even get to peek inside of Pandora’s box from time to time.
What’s your story?  Have you ever told it to anyone?  Do you like the way it’s going?  Frankly, I am still hunting for that elusive “textbook” case we’ve all heard about.  Do you have it?  While many stories are similar, no two are exactly alike.  Each is unique, interesting, and fascinating to me.  Yours is entitled to an audience.  You deserve to be heard.
So, go ahead and make my day!  Bring me your tired and poor huddled mass of characters yearning to be free.  Tell me about your conquests and disasters, gains and losses, successes and failures, joy and despair.  Share your tales of unrequited love, betrayal, yearning, and hope.  Explain how you have learned to live with something or survive without it?  Consider this an invitation to all you protagonists and antagonists out there.
If your character needs polish or the chapter you are living in involves problems to solve, obstacles to overcome, challenges to face, bullies to confront, rewards to claim, or skills to develop, 2011 is a terrific year to revise your scripts, rework unsatisfying chapters, clarify how you want your story to turn out, and develop plausible action sequences to get you to the next chapter.
Start this New Year in editing mode.  If there is an epic in you, I’ll work with you to turn it into an account you will be proud to claim as the compelling story of you.
