February is National Children’s Dental Health month, with volunteers like the Foundation for Children’s Dental Health who dedicated much support for the awareness in our community. Last December 27, 2010, the non-profit organization provided dental and preventative care to children who come from low-income households or might not have access to public transportation. A free, 30-minute oral evaluation and cleaning, with flourished varnish to help prevent cavities was part of the procedure the foundation gave to Santa Clarita’s school children at the end of last year. It was the first year the 17-year organization has set up this free program for kids and provided a check-up that’s generally a $100 procedure in typical dentist offices. The turnout reached its expectations, with 24 out of 25 kids attending their appointment. Ericka Watson, Executive Director said, “We get connected to families through local dental nurses in elementary schools throughout SCV. Our organization is lucky to have 40 to 50 volunteers with us.” Santa Clarita’s children will continue smiling thanks to the Foundation for Children’s Dental Health, with plenty of clean, healthy teeth to show off to all their friends and teachers at school.
