Last month, we talked mostly about the roofs of our RVs and the potential for water leaks.  With the recent rains that we have received, I thought it would be a good idea to stress a few things.  Most of the damage that an RV can suffer is usually very obvious.  A visual inspection will usually tell you what went wrong and what needs to be repaired.
This is not necessarily true when it comes to water damage.  There is usually no loud bang or bump that lets you know that you are about to have a problem.  After all it’s just rain.  But the heavier the downpour, the more likely a small leak will cause significant damage.  The dirt and oil that have combined to fill a lot of the small cracks in sealant and window trims can be washed away by heavy rain.  Another thing to remember is that the location of a water stain inside an RV doesn’t mean that the cause of the stain is directly above it.  Water (moisture) can travel along a truss or roof panel for many feet before it meets a ceiling or a sidewall panel.  And a small stain could be the only evidence of a severe problem.
Water damage left unrepaired usually leads to dry rot, mildew and mold growth.  Dry rot is very hard on an RV, and mold and mildew can be dangerous to the occupants.
If the RV is stored outside, you should inspect it after every significant rain or once a month, whichever comes first.  When you first notice a wet spot or stain, you should cover the RV with a tarp or canvas as soon as possible.  Preventative maintenance is the only way to eliminate most water damage.  The best type of maintenance is regular inspection by a quality RV repair facility.
The recent weather has also increased the number of RV accidents.  Delaying or postponing the repair of accident-related damage can result in significant water damage if rain seeps into a compromised exterior.  Damage to an RV caused by the delay of the owner filing a claim or not properly protecting the RV against further damage, may cause the denial of coverage by the insurance company.
Protect your investment.  Remember to keep the rubber side down and enjoy the RV life.
