• Do you know the history of Valentine’s Day? Well, there are several versions available to read on the internet, but according to one article in 1537, King Henry the Eighth, declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day, by Royal Charter.
• It took until the beginning of the 17th century for Valentine’s Day to gain popularity, and the 18th century for it to be common to exchange tokens of affection (perhaps chocolate?) or handwritten notes which made it easier to express emotions when direct expression was discouraged.
• Approximately 85 percent of all valentines are purchased by women.
• Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America
in the mid 1800s.
Chocolate Facts:
• Casanova, well known as “The World’s Greatest Lover,” ate and drank chocolate to make him virile. While he was reaping the benefits of “the love chemical known as Phenylethylamine” he probably didn’t know that eating it helped his health, too. So, go ahead, indulge in this decadent dessert… and give your libido a lift in time for Valentine’s Day.
• Cadbury (cocoa and chocolate company) produced the first box of chocolates in 1868 when he decorated a candy box with a painting of his young daughter holding a kitten in her arms. Cadbury also invented the first Valentine’s Day candy box.
• More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine’s Day.
• Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine’s Day in the U.S.
