I am often asked what can be done to make the water softener exchange tanks last longer. The answer to this question may be simpler than you think.
Since the restriction on automatic water softeners took effect in March of 2003 and the ban altogether in November of 2008, softening our water has become much more expensive. Where a top of the line automatic water softener might cost a family of four or five about $75 to $90 a year to maintain, the tank exchange for the same family can cost up to $80 a month. That adds up to $960 a year. Big difference.
So how can we make these tanks last longer? How can we reduce our expense for water softening in the long run and actually have a better quality water throughout the entire house?
First, I like to soften just the hot water line at the water heater only. This is common for most commercial and industrial applications. Business owners recognize this cost savings benefit. Laundry-dry cleaners, restaurants and fabricators all prefer this approach. It’s simply less expensive.
I then like to filter the water coming into the entire house. Eliminating the sediment and reducing the chloramine level enhances the water softening efficacy and greatly extends the life of the water softener exchange tank. It reduces the number of tanks we need each month therefore is considered to be more environmentally friendly.
Another huge benefit of not softening the cold water, you have quality drinking water available at every cold water faucet in the house. Remember, soft water is not desirable for drinking and cooking. Since sodium is used in water softening, and we are encouraged to reduce sodium in our diet, softening just the hot water makes sense. Coupled with the right type of whole house water filter, we can have a better water for us and our house.
With this approach I will make you two promises. First, your dishes will come out perfect every time. Second, that slippery feeling with soft water, where it feels like you can’t wash off all of the soap, will go away.
As always, I welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have. Thank you and good health to all.
