According to Real Simple Magazine, February 2011 issue, these are the 30 most healthiest foods: skim milk, mushrooms, whole-grain pasta, walnuts, peanut and almond butters, oatmeal, barley, quinoa, lentils, bulgur, almonds, eggs, nonfat Greek yogurt, chicken breasts, wild salmon, sardines, kale, kiwi, blueberries, broccoli, avocados, black beans, sweet potatoes, extra-virgin olive oil, edamame, chard, kidney beans, oranges, spinach and pumpkin.
When I first tried Weight Watchers, it was back in 1992. If I remember correctly, probably three-fourths of this list would have been prohibited on WW back then. It was all about eliminating fat.
Now the talk is about whole grains, “good” fat, and legumes. Even Weight Watchers has allowed all-you-can-eat vegetables and fruit – even bananas! Have you ever met a vegetarian who got fat on bananas?
Trying to eat healthy in the past was a drag. Dry toast, plain bone-less and skinless chicken breasts, and steamed broccoli has been replaced today with almond butter topped whole grain bread, pounded chicken filet with fresh mango salsa and roasted beets.
At Dawn’s Dinners, whether we are catering a large office meeting or feeding a family of one or four, we strive to use these “healthy” foods – the ones that fill your tummy and keep you fit. With the exception of sardines – which I guess we need to start experimenting with – we regularly use 29 of the “healthiest foods” in most of our meals.
To help meet your health and fitness goals, in March Dawn’s Dinners is teaming up with Santa Clarita Adventure Boot Camp for Women (www.santaclaritabootcamp.com). You will get your boot camp workout and healthy meals for one low price! We are also joining forces with Unruh Chiropractic (www.unruhchiropractic.com) for their Weight Loss Challenge.
