With a store practically on every corner, cupcakes have become a pop culture trend. Cupcakes can be traced back as far as 1796, when author Amelia Simms “American Cookery” noted a recipe “a cake to be baked in small cups.” Some culinary historians claim there are two theories: the batter was cooked in cups and the other a cup measure was used.
In 2005, when this cupcake craze took off, I assumed that it would not last. I was wrong. Cupcakes are just not for kids anymore. Remember the day when you would bake a simple cupcake and send it to school for a birthday treat? Now, more and more adults are going bonkers over specialty flavors. For bigger events and parties, towers and towers of cupcakes are being used. Even brides are using beautifully decorated white lace cupcake towers as wedding cakes.
I do feel as though cupcakes may help our over indulgence of sweets and large portions in this country. They are portioned controlled and one is usually enough to satisfy any age. Although cupcakes are small, somewhat inexpensive and you can get a variety, I think the world is missing out on classic desserts.
Carmela Louise Café/Bakery offers classic desserts such as cheesecakes, Crème Brûlée, éclairs, cream puffs, etc. A new alternative to the cupcake is “mini” pies. We offer many flavors such as banana cream, chocolate cream, toasted coconut custard, fruit tarts, lemon crème and lemon meringue, all of which are made with fresh ingredients and no preservatives.
However, due to popular demand, Carmela Louise Café/Bakery does offer a wide variety of cupcakes to include classic yellow with vanilla buttercream frosting, devil’s food with chocolate buttercream, chocolate peanut butter mousse, carrot, lemon crème, and piña colada just to name a few.
