On Thursday May 5, there will be a celebration on Main Street Old Town Newhall.
This event is called, “A Taste of Cinco de Mayo” a celebration of Latino culture.
The Old Town Newhall Association, The City of Santa Clarita, and The SCV Latino Chamber of Commerce have joined together in this effort.
This date commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is not, as many people think, Mexico’s Independence Day, which is actually September 16. This event, “A Taste of Cinco de Mayo,” is a celebration which includes all food, art, music and dance relative to the Latin culture.
The ARTree embraces this effort as an opportunity to bring to the forefront the diversity of our valley. As a community we need to recognize the importance of what those differences are and celebrate the various art forms.
The first Thursday of the month, is normally set aside for Art Walk, gourmet food trucks, the Farmers Market and The ARTree, which offers fun art activities for children. This year, May 5 happens to fall on the first Thursday. In addition to the normal activity, first Thursday will expand by one additional block. A large stage will be erected with featuring live performances from well-known Latino Bands along with local Folklorico dancers, and other community activities.
I have no doubt that this will be a huge success, bringing thousands of people to Old Town Newhall to help celebrate this great occasion. Please join The ARTree community arts center to make this an important milestone in bringing people and communities together.
