Croeso (that’s “Welcome” in Welsh). My name is Denise Carbone and I am The Welsh Baker. I was born in Wales but I immigrated to the United States 20 years ago. I’ve been making Welsh Cakes all my life from a recipe that was handed down over the generations in my family. My husband Joe and I started making Welsh Cakes commercially in America just over a year ago. Since then we have sold more than 100,000 cakes. We make our cakes right here in Santa Clarita and we sell and ship them daily to people in every state.
So what exactly is a Welsh Cake? Let’s say you started off to make a scone but half way thru you changed your mind and decided to make a cookie but then when it came time to cook it, you changed you mind yet again and decided to griddle your creation… you would end up with a Welsh Cake!
How and when do you eat them? They are perfect in the morning as a quick breakfast treat, delightful in the afternoon with coffee, and they are divine in the evening, warmed with a little ice cream. They can be eaten plain, or with a little butter, jam, honey, syrup or lemon curd. Our raisin, cranberry and blueberry flavors go perfectly with wine and cheese. Some people eat them straight from the package but we think they are best warmed a few seconds in the microwave. Chocolate chip is a favorite with kids and cinnamon is our best selling flavor overall. At about 100 calories a cake, they are a delicious, fluffy treat that won’t leave you feeling guilty for loving them.
Where can you get our Welsh Cakes? We sell online at: www.welshbaker.com and we participate in 40 to 50 street fairs and special events per year throughout the western states, somewhere different every week. On our website we offer variety and gift boxes that come with free priority shipping. We sell locally through our exclusive retail distributer, The Coffee Kiosk stores. Local SCV residents can order from our website and pick up fresh cakes within a day or so at any Coffee Kiosk drive thru in Santa Clarita.
