When it comes to your car’s “check engine” light being on, or going on and off, many people think that it is because the car or truck needs an oil change soon, or that it just might be a simple emission item that will not hurt to take care of later.  That kind of thinking can end up costing you a considerably higher repair bill than if you would have taken care of it when it started to appear.  When that light comes on it is the computer system telling you that something is wrong and needs to be attended to as soon as possible.  It is true that it could be a minor emission problem that you may not feel in the performance of your car, but it could be something serious that may do great harm to your car.
The computer system on your car monitors many different things but only has one light that comes on to warn you of such a problem.  When the light is on or has been on then goes off, the computer system stores a code or codes for the technician to recover and view what area the fault occurred.  Just because there is a code for something like a oxygen sensor for example, it does not mean that the oxygen sensor it at fault, rather it means this is what the computer is getting a bad reading on but many different things can cause this to happen.  You can come by our shop and get a free computer scan and we will explain what the code or codes are referring to.
