“Preserving open space in and around our City is a top priority for the City of Santa Clarita and our community,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “Haskell Canyon is a notable addition in maintaining open space preservation, wildlife connectivity, and expansion of the City’s greenbelt buffer, which provides residents with additional trail opportunities.”
Haskell Canyon is a 526-acre site located in the Angeles National Forest, just north of the City. The area is full of coastal sage scrub and oak woodlands, and threatened and endangered habitat and species. Future planning efforts include trail design, landscape cleanup and signage to accommodate equestrians, bicycles, and hiker’s needs.
Originally slated for development of more than 500 homes in the unincorporated area of the Santa Clarita Valley, this site would have significantly impacted traffic with an additional 5,000 trips per day on Copperhill Road, Benz Road, and Bouquet Canyon Road.
