Self-defense starts with you.  Victims of such crimes as robberies and rapes for example, are chosen by criminals in part because they perceived the victim to be an easy target.  Keyword here is “perception.”  Even during your mundane tasks such as going to the grocery store or to the gym, you can take measures to improve your personal safety.  We like to assimilate criminals to sharks in that they also attack what appears to be a “target of opportunity.”  This is where Situational Awareness (SA) comes into play, a term often used by Military and Law Enforcement personnel.  SA is a frame of mind, which includes paying attention to your surroundings, identifying potential threats, being aware of potential safe places or people that can assist you if need be.
Although Santa Clarita’s crime rate is well below the national average, here are some statistics of crime in Santa Clarita and unincorporated area from 2009: Documented gang members: 253, Criminal Homicide: six, Forcible Rape: 30, Robbery: 170, Aggravated Assault: 369, Burglary: 1,123, Larceny Theft: 2,847, and Grand Theft Auto: 447.  Current population: 176,320 (2010, United States Census).  Santa Clarita is rated by the FBI as the sixth safest city in the United States.
Things you can do to keep yourself from being perceived as a target.  Pay attention to your surroundings.  Let’s start with what not to do: Don’t talk on your cell phone while getting into or out of your vehicle, or while walking.  Don’t fumble/look for car or house keys in your purse or pockets while standing at your vehicle or front door.  Don’t give off the appearance of being lost.  Don’t believe that you are immune to attacks.
What to do: Act/appear confident, head high, shoulders back.  Walk with a purpose (even if you are lost).  Plan your next move.  Have your keys in hand before you need them.  Think about what you are doing and ask yourself: “Is this a good idea?”  Trust your instincts.  Keep looking around, maintain your SA.
Criminals read our body language to gauge how easily a person can become their victim.  Criminals are working in teams these days and can appear to be couples.  This tactic reduces the perceived threat, because females are perceived to be less of a threat.  Couples also draw less attention from law enforcement.  More information can be obtained by visiting Cobra Tactical.
