Self defense starts with you. Last month we discussed some do’s and don’ts with regard to SA pertaining to self defense. Fortunately crime is limited to the minority. Therefore, the majority perceive crime as happening to others and unlikely to happen to them. This is where you may get into trouble. When it comes to SA the majority of people do not take sufficient precautions nor do they plan ahead. The point of this article is to get you to change that. There are a number of “things” that can be done to improve your safety. Here are some tips.
Park in well lit areas and don’t park next to vans or “suspicious” looking vehicles. Also be cautious if such a vehicle is parked next to you. Get a security escort or wait until the vehicle leaves. If you see suspicious activities don’t hesitate to notify the authorities or even a local establishment. Hide recently purchased items and valuables. Maintain a confident outward appearance and don’t appear to be lost even if you are looking for your car. Make sure no one is following you.
At home, lock the door and set the alarm. Get a dog or a “Barking Dog Alarm.” Make sure the perimeter of the residence is well lit. Don’t let people in your house you don’t know, such as a solicitor. Lock the door, if getting payment for pizza, etc.
When choosing a babysitter for your kids, make sure to qualify the person. Run babysitters through a reputable background check agency and get their references. Install video cameras “baby cams” in the house. Monitor your kid’s Internet activities. Remember, kids are likely smarter on computers than you are. So read up and protect your kids.
