Here are some tips to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of fraud. First off, what is fraud? Fraud is the intentional deception for personal gain without regard to the welfare of another. Fraud is a crime and a civil law violation. Several types of fraud or scams exist, however the most prolific, according to the FBI, are: Investment, Internet, and those that target Senior Citizens.
Anyone is at risk, however, the elderly, children and young adults are more than ever being targeted.
The latter, is due to the rise in social networking sites where posting even basic information provides enough data for criminals to apply for credit cards or other financial and legal commitments. Not 18 yet? No problem. Criminals will wait until you are, then use the information to wreak havoc. Understand the threat and avoid putting too much personal information on the web. Parents need to monitor their kid’s Internet usage.
The Nigerian Letter or “419” fraud has many names and twists on the same story. Basically, you receive an email asking for help with a promise to pay you a large sum of money. Not true. Never give out your information; personal, bank, or otherwise unless you know who you are speaking to. If you doubt the integrity of the person who called you, take their name and company information down, but look up their telephone number from a reliable source and then call them back. Guard your bank account and credit card information. Investor cold calling – they want your money and promise a big payout. But who are they? Do they really have your best interest in mind?
