On June 18 at 6:30 p.m., Anne Hoffman will demonstrate floral still life in oil, free to the public, sponsored by the Santa Clarita Artists’ Association (SCAA). Her finished demo will be raffled off.

“For me painting is all about color,” said Hoffman. Like the Impressionists and Expressionists who have influenced her, Hoffman uses color, value and composition to explore mood and emotion in her landscapes and figures. Her landscapes, noted for their vibrant color, are mostly based on local areas around the Santa Monica Mountains and beaches, where she regularly paints en plein air. She allows these sketches to stand alone or uses them with photo resources for larger studio work.
“During the painting process my figures take on a life of their own, with their own story and destiny that I find fascinating,” Hoffman said. Her main focus at present is figurative narratives, to express the wonders and intimacy of the human condition. Her work can be recognized not only for its jewel-like colors, but also by the thick, bold, bravura-style brushwork. An accomplished portrait artist also, she encourages commissioned work, and uses live models whenever possible, in order to better depict flesh and blood in her studio figure paintings. She studied over four years with both Lance Richlin, an ‘old master’ style figure and portrait painter, and then with Sharon Burkett-Kaiser, a well-known California Impressionist, herself a student of the legendary 20th century Russian Impressionist Sergei Bongart. Johanna Spinks, a gifted portrait artist and teacher, has also been a great influence. Hoffman continues to take workshops with the Chinese Master Impressionist, Jove Wang.
Ms. Hoffman had successful solo exhibits in California and Cambridge, England. She gained teaching experience at Linton College, Cambridge and continues teaching in Southern California. Currently she is represented by Marchese Fine Art Gallery in Marina Del Rey. She spent a year studying at the classical art ‘Academie Notre Dame de Champs’ in Paris.
A native of London, Annie Hoffman now lives and works in Los Angeles. In 1995 she resolved to become a serious, dedicated oil painter.
