Have you ever felt as though you were sleepwalking through your life? It seems a cliché, but one worth contemplating. Most of us live each day, year after year, without much thought about where we are going or who we are. Our society gives us a message that if we are satisfying our material needs with a house, a decent career or money, some vacation time and a good family that we have fulfilled our purpose. Many people add some religion or spirituality to this. Yet even when we have fulfilled this formula for happiness, there often seems to be something missing.
We live our lives mechanically, without deep inner thought as to its meaning and substance. Too afraid to get deep and too easily satisfied with the material existence our society encourages- often creating a life of mediocrity.
How often do we stop and ask ourselves, from deep within, “What does all this mean? Where is all this going?” “Why am I doing these things?” Answering these questions doesn’t suggest you will stop doing them; quite the opposite. By developing a personal philosophy we are discovering the meaning behind our actions and the way we live. Once the reasons you do things are known to you on a conscious level you become more motivated to do them and to succeed at them. Instead of living static lives on auto-pilot, we live dynamic lives. Whether we use this to find new motivation in our current life or to make changes for a new one is then up to us.
Whether we discover the true meaning behind our work, career, family or relationship or any part of our life, that discovery will add meaningfulness to every aspect of your life.
This means going on a journey; probably the most important and exciting journey you can ever have. This is the journey of self-discovery. It begins with a desire to extinguish that subtle sense of “something missing,” the desire to discover the meaning of your own life and existence.
Once a personal philosophy and true understanding becomes known to you, the ordinary life becomes extraordinary. Everything we experience becomes profound and meaningful. Life is precious. Don’t waste it by living the unexamined, unimproved life. Find the motivation you’re missing and make sense of the life you’re living.
