College bound students should take time during the summer to get organized and boost up their admissions portfolio. Completing these activities will lighten the load during the school year and get you ready for college acceptance.
Number One: Start Your College Essay
See what topics you have to cover in your essay and start drafting it now. The essay shows the school how well you communicate in writing while revealing a bit about your personality. Summer is a great time to relax into a topic, research it and let it flow offering plenty of time to fine-tune it before submission.
Number Two: Visit College Campuses
You’ve likely come up with a number of choices in your college search so go visit them. It’s a great family road trip and nothing gives a feel for the college more than being on the campus. Walk around, talk with students, check out campus life and see if you could picture yourself there.
Number Three: Volunteer In Your Community
Compassion is a valuable personality trait that admission counselors look for in prospective students. Colleges want good people and nothing says considerate, kind and selfless better than volunteering in your local community. Need ideas? Then call a local community center, animal shelter, nursing home, or other non-profit to see if they need help. Chances are they do.
Number Four: Get a Summer Job
Another important trait all admission counselors look for is personal responsibility. Colleges will look on any work experience very favorably and a letter of recommendation can easily be obtained from the employer about your employment.
Number Five: Study For College Entrance Exams
Even if you took the SAT and ACT tests during your junior year, you’ll want to take them again to see if you can improve your scores. Don’t let the tests creep up on you! Set some time to study now so you’ll be well prepared come test day.
