As in every piece that Howard executes, the canvas captures the minute details of the world around the subjects and perfectly frames the story being told. Note the detailed branches, the rich colors of the rocks being used as both barricades and as a place to mount a shot.
One of the most difficult things for an artist to master is the capture of light and shadows, which is done with great mastery here, as evidenced by the manner in which the shades of green blend with earth tones while the sunlight filters through from the distant blue skies. We love the intensity of the Indian taking aim, while another warrior readies the reload.
