Federal funding for children dropped in 2011.  State funding continues to be a challenge as California deals with the effects of the recession, and programs that specialize in the care of children continue to struggle.  Thriving communities depend on the vast number of activities undertaken by nonprofit organizations to keep children engaged, active, and enjoying life.  Many programs that care for the emotional and social needs of children are at risk.

Most readers know the importance of education, want to solve social problems, and support worthwhile services.  So, when they can, they volunteer.  You can build a stronger network of care for children by getting involved in the work of nonprofits.  You can help “take care of children” by investing your time, talent, or knowledge to a children’s program.  You can also serve on the board of directors for a nonprofit organization or attend a fundraising event.
Children in the foster care system move frequently.  You can help by donating the following new items to Inner Circle Foster Care and Adoption Services: diapers, bottles, t-shirts, socks, underwear, blankets, car seats, games, toys, backpacks, shoes, books, and gift cards.
