Zonta’s 28th annual Celebrity Tribute will present “Fabulous Follies in the Zonta Lounge Featuring Shelly Hann” on Friday, November 2 at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. Honoree, Shelly Hann, has been a dedicated volunteer in our community for the past 20 years. Thirty sponsor packets have been prepared and are being delivered to companies and individuals for an opportunity to attend and support this fabulous event.
This is Zonta’s largest fundraiser of the year and provides funds for service projects such as Girls Robotics, LifeForward workshops, Domestic Violence Advocacy Program, Virginia Wrage Memorial Fund grants, community grants for non-profit organization projects, and Young Women in Public Affairs and Jane M. Upcoming Zonta’s LifeForward workshops will present Parent Anger Management and communication – A moment to exhale! on September 15 and Self Esteem – Everyone’s happy when Mom’s happy! on October 20. These free Workshops are held monthly on a Saturday and from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Single Mother’s Outreach, 26881 Ruether Avenue, Canyon Country. Virginia Wrage Memorial Fund grants are available to support mature women who are making a career change or need assistance as a result of a life-altering event. Go to www.zontascv.org for more information regarding these awards and an application. Submittal deadline is October 15.
Community Services committee will focus on making heart-shaped comfort pillows with adjustable shoulder straps; these will hold a hot or cold pack close to the chest and provide comfort for breast cancer patients in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Girls Robotic Program – Girls Robotics is designed to foster interest and skills in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Girls between the ages of 11 and 14 will design, program and control fully-functional Lego Mindstorm robots – programming them to accomplish missions on a competition board. The girls will decide later this fall whether they wish to enter robotics competitions hosted by Lego on a regional basis.
The Santa Clarita – Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Program (SCV-DVCAP) provides advocates that assist individuals seeking legal protection from domestic violence through the judicial system by offering emotional support, explaining court procedures and accompanying victims to court proceedings.
