January marks the beginning of the college planning process in addition to submitting the FAFSA so we’ve compiled 7 strategies for Juniors to help them ring in the new year right.

Get fully engaged in the college planning mode and begin planning activities for testing (SAT, ACT, and AP); college visits; essay writing; meeting with your counselor or College Planning Expert; review your senior schedule; know your requirements; and organize college forms.  Get a calendar, pin-point dates and commit to taking action to get things done.

Take a test-prep class before taking the ACT / SAT to help you properly prepare.  Visit www.collegeplanningexperts.com to learn more about student planning, links and recommendations to programs.
Become a well-balanced student.  Colleges like seeing effort to distinguish yourself as a leader.  Extracurricular activities and clubs are important so look for leadership positions related to activities or careers you enjoy.
Make any schedule changes sooner rather than later in the year and visit with your counselor regularly.
Focus on making strong grades.  Colleges are very interested in the grades you get second semester.  These are the last grades noted before evaluating you.
Begin your college search and find schools that match your academic and personal needs first.  Do not eliminate schools because of cost – I know how to find free money for college!
Start visiting schools close to home and explore different campuses.  They may not be of interest to you in terms of attending, but you’ll gain an idea of the kind of campus you might like.
College planning does not need to be overwhelming, especially when you get an early start and stay on course.  Parents and students can attend a free College Planning Workshop and also receive a complimentary consultation this month.  Visit www.collegeplanningexperts.com for dates and locations or call our office to learn more.
Happy planning and Happy New Year!
