As we ring into the first quarter of 2013, a college bound junior needs to know that 2013 marks as the official start of the college planning process and now is the time to take action.
Engage full throttle into college planning mode. Calendar activities and include dates for SAT, ACT, and AP tests, college visits, essay writing, meeting with your counselor or College Planning Expert, reviewing your senior schedule, requirements, and forms.
Most will take the ACT or SAT for the first “official” time. I recommend a test prep class to help you properly prepare. Visit www.collegeplanningexperts.com to learn more about student planning, recommendations and links to programs.
Be a well-rounded student. Colleges like seeing extra effort to be a member of organizations and distinguish yourself as a leader. Extracurricular activities are important so look for leadership positions related to activities or careers you enjoy.
Work hard and make strong grades. Colleges are interested in grades you get second semester. These are the last grades noted before evaluating. Also, make any schedule changes sooner rather than later.
Begin your college search. This is an important piece and I have helped over 1,100 families through it. Research to find schools that match academic and personal needs. Do not eliminate schools because of costs – I know how to find free college money. Keep an open mind and don’t limit yourself to just familiar schools.
Visit schools close to home to get a feel for different campuses. They may not be of interest to you in terms of attending, but you’ll gain an idea of size and what kind of campus you might like.
College planning does not need to be overwhelming, especially if you get an early start.
