Mother’s Day is a day to celebrate and honor motherhood, and the influence these special women have in our lives. It is typically celebrated on the second Sunday of May, and this year, it will be celebrated on May 12.
In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked our readers to submit a letter and photo telling us about their mother and why she is extraordinary. We received many wonderful letters and photos. Thank you all for your submissions.
Meet DeAun Ginsburg, our 2013 Marvelous Mother contest winner.
We received this letter from David, husband of DeAun and father to two and a half year old Jessilynn, otherwise known as “Jessi”. He wrote this letter on behalf of Jessi, who was adopted through the Los Angeles County Foster Care System. Jessi, born three months premature, was brought home after a four-month hospital stay. “You can see the love the two of them share for each other,” states David. “It’s an amazing bond, not from genetics, but true love, caring, understanding and compassion.”

My mom always wanted to be a mother. She couldn’t have children and decided to adopt through the foster care system. It was a long process taking over three years from start to adoption. Even with so much uncertainty if I would stay with her, she still cared for me as if I was her own. From visiting me in the NICU to therapy three times a week, trips to Disneyland and swim lessons, up to give me medicine in the middle of the night and teaching me my manners, abc’s and numbers. Biological or adoptive, I love her…she’s my mom.
