Who doesn’t like to be recognized?  Whenever you see someone getting a high five, an Atta boy, or being praised, you can bet that there will be a smile from the person on the receiving end.  Whether it is closing that big deal, scoring a touchdown, achieving academic excellence, or for a job well done, being recognized is rewarding and can make you feel great.  Being recognized is important.  It sends a very powerful message that the recipient is important.  Additionally, recognition sends a message throughout the company that its leaders care about good performance, and they will notice your efforts.

Abraham Harold Maslow, an American psychologist, who was known for creating “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.”  It is a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization.  The hierarchy lists “esteem” as the second highest order of needs.  It has been proven that using praise in the workplace will increase employees’ self-esteem and feeling of respect from others.  Research has proven that recognition and praise of one’s effort is more highly valued than money.
What do top companies and the best sport teams have in common?  They have mastered maximizing the potential of their employees and/or players.  Both have programs in effect that recognizes all the different parts of their team.  It is easy to praise the quarterback, but what about the offensive line that gives him an extra second or two by providing great blocking so he can make the play?  Top teams understand that everyone has a role to play, and the team is only as strong as its weakest link.  Too many companies only reward their number one salesman and innocently ignore the people behind the scenes that make and ship the product to make sure it arrives on time.
Many successful businesses have reward and recognition programs in place to acknowledge excellence on a regular basis.  Remember, we all strive to be recognized.  Begin the process today, and you will soon see the value of this on many different levels.
