The ARTree Community Arts Center had a fun filled summer with classes at both community centers, the creation and installation of a new mural known as the “Ever-Changing Wall,” on Railroad Avenue, and activities for both Senses and Art Slam events.
Now with the arrival of fall the ARTree is in the midst of classes at the Activities Center. We have also resumed our twice-monthly classes at the Old Town Newhall Library. These classes are held in the community room of the library on the first and second Fridays of each month from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. The classes are designed for kids 10 years and older. The ARTree will also teach our six-week Arts Sampler at the Newhall Community Center beginning on October 22. There’s still time to sign up for these classes.
We’ve also started work on a whole new community based project. Funded by an arts grant through the City of Santa Clarita, the ARTree is designing and installing a mosaic tile mural in the South Fork trail that runs along the Santa Clara River behind the auto dealerships on Creekside. The mural will have an oak tree as its central focus. ARTree president and founder Bob Hernandez is the designer of the scene and Dianne Foderaro will coordinate the installation. The ARTree is inviting the whole community to come and add tile pieces to the project. We want everyone to feel ownership of this beautiful new addition to Santa Clarita. When people bike, run, or walk down that trail it will be wonderful to know that adults and children alike can point to some part of the mural and say, “I added that tile to the mosaic!” We want people to bring their friends and say, “Look what we did. I met new people and made new friends when we all added tile pieces to this mural.” Of course, that’s what the ARTree is all about. We are sharing the arts with the children of Santa Clarita as well as with their parents, grandparents, friends and neighbors.
